Supply Chain Resilience for Carbon Fiber Bicycle Frames

Discover how Global Warming Potential (GWP) data can support more informed sourcing, manufacturing, and logistics decisions by comparing alternatve supply chain configurations for carbon fiber composite bicecyle frames.

Introduction to the Demonstrator

This demonstrator models the complete supply chain for manufacturing a carbon fiber composite bicycle frame, from raw material production to final assembly. It compares five realistic supply chain scenarios that differ in sourcing locations, manufacturing processes, and transport routes. Through interactive scenarios, you can evaluate the trade-offs between emissions, production locations, transportation routes, and material sourcing, enabling the design of supply chains that are not only more climate-neutral but also more resilient to disruptions. By exploring these scenarios, you can evaluate the trade-offs between emissions, production locations, transportation routes, and material sourcing, to understand how strategic supply chain decisions can influence the overall carbon footprint while supporting more sustainable and resilient manufacturing strategies.

Understanding the GWP Calculation

GWP quantifies the greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout the product lifecycle. It consists of:

  • Production GWP: Emissions from manufacturing processes, including carbon fiber production, fabric weaving, resin curing, and frame assembly
  • Transport GWP: Emissions from moving materials and semi-finished products between production stages using different transport modes

The total GWP is the sum of all production and transport emissions across the entire supply chain.

Use Case

Carbon fiber bicycle frame manufacturing involves a complex, international supply chain with multiple production stages distributed across different regions. Variations in raw material sourcing, manufacturing locations, energy mixes, and transportation methods can significantly affect both environmental performance and supply chain robustness. This demonstrator allows users to compare five representative supply chain scenarios and assess how alternative sourcing and manufacturing strategies influence total GWP.

Climate neutrality and resilience: By optimizing production locations, sourcing strategies, and transport routes, companies can reduce operational costs, lower emissions, and decrease dependence on volatile energy markets.
